Event: 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival at Monterey Fairgrounds, Fri, Sep 17 6:00p
The Monterey Jazz Festival is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to perpetuating jazz. We are proud to provide year-round Jazz Education Programs, showcased in our annual Next Generation Jazz Festival. We are pleased to present the world's best jazz entertainment in the Monterey Jazz Festival, the longest running jazz festival in the world. Held every September on the Monterey Fairgrounds site where the Festival was first presented in 1958 the Monterey Jazz Festival began as a dream for founder Jimmy Lyons and his co-founder and colleague, Ralph Gleason. It was a dream of a "sylvan setting with the best jazz people in the whole world playing on the same stage, having a whole weekend of jazz." That dream became reality in 1958, with the first Monterey Jazz Festival bringing in artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, John Lewis, Shelly Manne, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Ernestine Anderson, Harry James, Max Roach, and Billie Holiday. Every year since then, every third full weekend in September sees the same caliber of talent grace the now nine stages on the Monterey Fairgrounds, as the Monterey Jazz Festival presents the best jazz performers in the world for a three-day celebration of the best in jazz. In addition, the Monterey Jazz Festival features jazz conversations, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, clinics, and an international array of food, shopping, and festivities spread throughout the 20-acre Monterey Fairgrounds.

Event: Greyhound Adoption Information Event - Greyhound Friends For Life at PetCo, Sun, Sep 5 11:00a
Greyhound Friends For Life holds a monthly Adoption Information event at Petco in Del Monte Center every first Sunday of the month. These beautiful dogs make wonderful companions. They are adaptable to most living situations, however, they are exclusively indoor dogs as their short coats and lack of body fat make them intolerant to extremes in weather. They should never be let off leash in an unfenced area, as former racers they have been trained to run as fast as they can when unleashed, especially if they see something moving in the distance. Because these beauties are capable of running at up to 45 miles per hour, a hound running free is very likely to be hit by a car or lost. Keeping them safe in an enclosed area is essential. Once they have transitioned from race track to home life, they thrive on companionship, daily walks, and sleeping in the comfort of a soft bed ? and every dog deserves a kind touch, a warm bed, and a loving home to call it's own! The name "45 mile an hour couch potato" is quite fitting for this breed! They thank you for adopting them every day with their big, soft brown eyes and a gentle nuzzle with their long elegant nose to show affection. Swift as the wind, elegant as a gazelle... the greyhound has been prized throughout history for its intelligence, speed and beauty. Today, this ancient breed, once the companion of kings, has been claimed by a new master, the multi-billion dollar greyhound racing industry. Now, the once noble greyhound runs for its life. Thousands of puppies are bred each year, but dogs that don't make enough money for their owners are discarded. Despite the best efforts of adoption groups throughout the country, thousands of these gentle, beautiful greyhounds are killed or sold for medical experimentation every year. Greyhound Friends For Life is a nonprofit greyhound rescue, adoption, and advocacy organization dedicated to finding qualified homes for former racing greyhounds and educating the public about the inherent cruelties of greyhound racing. We bring our own adopted ex-racers as "Demo dogs" to provide a hands on experience for people of all ages who have never been exposed to the wonder and gentle nature of this ancient breed. Several race tracks around the country closed last year, which is a good thing, however, this has produced many more available dogs. There are many hounds still waiting at the farms and tracks all over the country. We bring in as many as we can to our Foster Facility in Auburn as well as to our Foster homes with our dedicated volunteers until they're lucky enough to find forever homes. There will be a never-ending supply of greyhounds as long as the race tracks are running. Fortunately there are hundreds of adoption groups all over the world working tirelessly to help the hounds. Come visit with our volunteers and learn about the plight of the racing greyhound. These dogs quite literally "Run for Their Lives" Please visit our website for more information, check out the photos of "available for adoption" as well as the "recently adopted" under the ADOPT tab.
